Students from India will need to sit for IELTS if they want to study in countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom among others.

Let us look at a few facts about IELTS:

#1 IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System

#2 IELTS is the world’s proven test and its score is accepted by more than 8,000 organizations in over 135 countries. 

#3 The exam is co-managed by The University of Cambridge, The British Council, and IDP Education Australia.

#4 This test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

#5 There are two types of IELTS: The General IELTS and the Academic IELTS .

#6 The General IELTS is for the students who wish to migrate to an English speaking country for work or training reasons.

#7 The Academic IELTS is for students, who wish to study in an English speaking country,
# 8 The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both exams, but the Writing and Reading sections differ.
#9 The duration of IELTS is of 2 hours and 44 minutes. This includes: 

- 30 minutes for the Listening section 
- 60 minutes that last the Reading section 
- 60 minutes to write the texts of the Writing section and 
- Between 11-14 minutes to answer the three parts of the Speaking section

#10 The speaking module is a key component of IELTS. It is conducted in the form of a one-to-one interview with an examiner. 

The examiner assesses the candidate as he or she is speaking, but the speaking session is also recorded for monitoring.

#11 Test takers are graded and placed on a scale from 1 (Non User) to 9 (Expert User) — most university requirements fall between 5.5 and 7.0 of the academic strand.

#12 The test is taken every year in 500 locations across 121 countries, and is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world.
