IIT-JEE 2014: 5 smart strategies for serious students:

IIT-JEE 2014: 5 smart strategies for serious students

What do you need to do to score well for IIT-JEE? How many questions do you attempt every day? This article is for students who are serious about JEE and getting into the IITs. ------------------------------ APPROACH TO JEE ------------------------------ You will need to spend around three or four years practicing for JEE if you want to do well. JEE is only for students who have numerical aptitude and their skills and interests are towards engineering. Do not attempt JEE if that is what your parents, family or friends put pressure on you and your Maths is weak. #MUST READ: IIT-JEE 2014: Recommended reference books ------------------------------ STRATEGY FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS ------------------------------ Remember that JEE is more analytical than what you are used to. You need to make sure that you score well for your Class 11 as well as your Class 12 board exams. You need to be mentally prepared. 1. Solve between 60-80 questions from the day you start preparing This number includes all sections - Set realistic targets and plan the next day’s work in advance - If you can do 100 problems, don’t set the target to 150 2. Set a time limit when you attempt questions Speed is important in doing well in JEE. Make sure your score improves with time 3. Solve past year papers for at least 10 years Do this in addition to the 60-80 questions that you have done for each day. - Look for changes in the number of questions from areas and the pattern 4. Find short-cuts You will find shorter ways of solving problems using logic as you solve more problems - Develop a separate technique to handle all three subjects - Spend more time on subjects that you are not that strong in 5. Keep up to date with changes for JEE (Mains) and Advanced It’s important that you keep up to date with any changes. Your board exam is now important for JEE. Only students who are in the top 20 percentile of their boards qualify for JEE (Advanced).

IIT – JEE 2014: BEST REFERENCE BOOKS FOR JEE ASPIRANTS

IIT – JEE 2014: BEST REFERENCE BOOKS FOR JEE ASPIRANTS:

IIT – JEE 2014: BEST REFERENCE BOOKS FOR JEE ASPIRANTS

Generally we observe that most ofthe times students are asking about best coaching classes available for them, but remember coaching can only support you in your preparation but they can’tprepare you for examination.
For your convenience, we have tried to break down the topics/subjectsand give you a list of best books for IIT JEE among which you may choose yoursuitable combination. We also have student reviews for these books which mayhelp you by giving an insight into the experiences of other students like you.
Most important step forany serious JEE aspirant is ‘wise selection of books’. Number of books doesn’tmatter; don’t follow 3-4 books for each topic. There are some standards booksavailable in market, follow those only. Generally I see many students followdifferent books for JEE Advanced, JEE Main and BITSAT, please don’t follow thisway. Read only those books that will help you to build your concepts.
One more importantpoint that you should keep in mind, every book is biased in favor of theauthor’s specialized skills, so it’s not necessary to solve each bookcompletely. Choose different books to understand different topics based ontheir specialization.
Remember thatthere will be a lot of students taking JEE along with you. The rules from thisyear state that you need to be in the top 20 percentile of your board totake JEE (Advanced).
Together with a good study plan and motivation, you will have no problemcracking JEE.
We’ve done the research for you andcompiled a list of the best books that will help you crack IIT-JEE.

IIT Delhi brightens up south Delhi slum

IIT Delhi brightens up south Delhi slum:

IIT Delhi brightens up south Delhi slum

The students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi will take up the task of illuminating the slums in Munirka, south Delhi through a solar lighting project, an official statement said.
IIT-Delhi is working on the project in collaboration with My Sister Foundation of India, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
The project titled "Liter of Light" has already provided 55W light to three households in the slums.
"The plastic coke and water bottles are filled with water and suspended from the roof of the house. With the simple concept of refraction of light from denser to rarer medium, the light is generated through the light from the sun," Revant Soni, a student working on the project told IANS.
In the slums, shanties are so close to each other that hardly any sunlight reaches there forcing dwellers to keep the lights on even in daytime.
With these bottles, it helps cut down a lot on the electricity consumption.
The project has been put into implementation following the research undertaken for three months.
"The first three installations were done by the students but now we have explained the procedure of installation to the community members and they would be completing the project," added Soni.
Around 25 students, including volunteers of IIT-Delhi, have worked for the development of the project.

Engineering: Bridging the skill gap

Engineering: Bridging the skill gap:

Engineering: Bridging the skill gap

I work in an engineering company and every year we actively induct hundreds of engineers, across levels, into the organisation. When we take fresh engineers, we invest hugely in their training to ensure the best possible foundation and bridge the gap between their capabilities and our requirements. Today, it appears that India is in a position to produce the number of engineers as demanded by the industry.
This is primarily due to a proliferation of engineering and technological institutes in the private sector which, in turn, has sufficiently augmented the initial investment of the government sector in education.
From purely a volume perspective, India has nearly four thousand engineering colleges which have an overall annual intake of around 1.2 million students. If numbers were all that mattered, we would not be complaining. Sadly the collective competence represented in these figures is still below par leading to the qualitative imbalance with the demands of the industry.
They say our education system produces talent, which is not industry ready. We need to answer two main questions to understand this better – 1) Why are we in this current state and 2) What corrective actions should we take?
Both the industry and the academic institutions are to be blamed for this qualitative imbalance. The industry has perhaps not taken enough efforts to partner with the academia to design and deliver an industry-ready syllabus.  Furthermore, the industry may not have provided outcome-oriented internships to the students to enable them to understand the practical issues which the industry faces, and also to align their knowledge of engineering to help solve the same.
Academic institutions, on the other hand, have done no better. They seem more driven by the profit motive rather than to serve the needs of industry and society.  Even today the best students prefer to join IITs, NITs and government engineering colleges since these institutions are more focused on education and not driven by other motives.
While all educational institutions should ideally be self sustaining and not subsidised by the government, it is equally important that they also focus on designing and delivering a syllabus which meets the needs of the industry.  This is possible only when the academia is willing to visit industries and partner with them to design and develop their curriculum.
Sadly, this shortcoming is not restricted to engineering colleges alone.  Even in the best business schools, we hardly have any case studies developed on the Indian industry and the issues we face locally. This again is a perfect example of a lack of partnership at both ends. Neither industry nor academia seems willing to go the extra mile to share and write case studies based on real life problems of the Indian industry.
Both the government and private sector play a critical role in the education arena. Their partnership with industry will further strengthen efforts to achieve common goals.  Admittedly, the road that lies ahead is long and possibly ridden with hurdles. But never before has the journey been so exciting or challenging. For now, we need not bother about the finishing line.
All we need to do is put one step firmly in front of the other as we walk together.

IIT-JEE: How to crack JEE without coaching classes

IIT-JEE: How to crack JEE without coaching classes:

IIT-JEE: How to crack JEE without coaching classes

It is undoubtedly true that JEE; the entrance exam for IIT is difficult to get through. One has to spend months after months for preparation of this exam.
Just being able to pass is not enough; you also have to secure a good All India Rank (AIR) in order to get into one of the IITs or NITs.
Many students resort to the coaching classes which assure them of good rank in these entrances with the help of their coaching.
Some also charge enormous fees for providing this coaching.
But what about those students who cannot afford to pay heavy fees? Is it true that students can’t clear this exam without proper coaching? The answer is NO.
Let us look at some tips on how you can crack the JEEs without help from coaching classes:
---------------------------------
Keep positive
---------------------------------

Firstly you need to develop a positive mental attitude that it is not an impossible task. If you revise regularly and have the right materials in hand, everything will automatically fall into place.
With hard work and dedication, anything can be achieved.
#READ: 5 TIPS TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY
---------------------------------
Pay attention
---------------------------------
Since you won’t be attending coaching classes, make sure you pay attention in class and understand what is being taught. If you pay attention in class and retain what is being taught, half your work is done.
Tip: Do not hesitate to ask questions. If you have any doubts or queries, clarify them immediately. Do not wait till the exams approach.
---------------------------------
Stick to your timetable
---------------------------------

Prepare a study timetable for yourself and make sure you stick to it. Do not get carried away by distractions and divide your time judiciously between all the subjects.
---------------------------------

IIT: QS World University Rankings not applicable to engineering institutes:

Officials from theIndian Institutes of Technologies have said the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)rankings for universities are not applicable to the IITs.
SN Singh, DeputyDirector (Operations) at IIT-Delhi was reported to have said that QS rankings wereapplicable to universities, whereas IITs are engineering institutes.
Singh was quoted assaying that the IITs appear in the top positions when one looks at the topengineering institutes in the world.
Rankings for the top 200Asian universities as well as the top 200 universities in the world werereleased on September 10.

How to choose a good engineering college?

How to choose a good engineering college?

Institutes such as IIT, NIT are well known for their teaching standards and therefore they are first choice of students who wish to pursue engineering.
But not every student is capable of qualifying the rigorous entrances that these institutes conduct to admit students. These students have to face a big problem of choosing a good engineering college.
Here are a few tips about how to choose a good engineering college.

#1 Institute
The first thing to verify before applying to a particular college is its accreditation and affiliation.
In India, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation holds value and for engineering colleges, they need to be approved by University Grants Commision (UGC) and affiliated to Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

#2 Faculty
Another important factor you need to verify is the faculty of the college.
You can visit the college website to check their qualification, experience and information about where they have studied.
A faculty member who is active in research will normally have a better understanding of the latest developments in the area and therefore be in a position to explain better.
The number of faculty members is also important as the faculty to student ratio is an important aspect affecting the quality of education.

#3 Infrastructure
This is the second important factor that students need to check as the environment in the institute also has a huge impact on academic performance.
Apart from that the classrooms, laboratory, library, recreational facilities, canteen can be checked by actually visiting the institute. A fully-residential campus usually provides a better learning environment.

#4 Internships & Placements
Last but not the least factor is placement and internships. Students can check the record of which companies visit the institute for campus placements. You can talk to the students to find out details like:
- How many students get placed in good companies?
What are the packages that are offered to them?
- Which are places that students visit for internship from that institute?
- What kind of training are they provided over there?
