Engineering: How average students find good careers:
There has been another report stating that engineering students are not employable, particularly those from tier 2 and 3 institutes.
Other reports state that there is a mismatch between areas that students are graduating in and the jobs available.
In the case of Engineering, this means that projects get delayed as firms have to spend more to re-train freshers in the skills required.
About 3.5 lakh students
graduated in Engineering in 2012. Out of this, 4.5 percent are employable in firms such as Microsoft. This 4.5 percent mainly comes from the IITs and NITs.
Streams students graduated in:
32.5% - Computer Science & IT
21.8% - Electronics
17.7% - Mechanical
What do students from tier 2/3 institutes lack?
Employers state that engineering graduates from tier 2 and 3 lack four main skills:
- Domain knowledge
- Ability to understand the business context
- Ability to interact with the customer
- Advanced technology skills and cloud computing
What can students do about this?
The first three are quite simple:
- Have a thorough grasp of your field by understanding concepts
- Take communication classes seriously if they are offered in your Engineering course
- Group projects and social activities provide an opportunity to develop skills in interaction
- Develop an interest in the business aspects. An MBA may be helpful
The good news is that because competition is so intense for Tier 1 institutes, firms are looking to recruit from Tier 2 and 3 institutes.
So if your communication and concepts are good, you have an edge over other students.
